How should we advise patients with allergic contact dermatitis caused by (meth-)acrylates about future dental work?

چکیده
Although acrylic monomers are strong skin sensitizers (1), their corresponding fully cured polymers are considered to be inert. Until recent years, allergic contact dermatitis caused by acrylates, the term comprising, in the following, also methacrylates, was primarily an occupational disease among dentists, printers, and fiberglass workers (2). In our practice, there has been a steady increase in the frequency of acrylate allergy in consumers and nail technicians (3) secondary to the increasing popularity of artificial nails and nail varnishes, and we find it challenging how best to advise patients with regard to future dental work involving acrylates, as there are no published data and only a few case reports of allergic contact stomatitis caused by acrylates (4).

Allergic contact dermatitis caused by acrylates and methacrylates--a 7-year study.
BACKGROUND Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by (meth)acrylates is traditionally an occupational disease among dentists, printers, and fibreglass workers. With the use of artificial nails, cases have been reported both in nail technicians and in users. OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to characterize ACD caused by (meth)acrylates, identify the responsible allergens, and assess th...

BACKGROUND Acrylates constitute an important cause of occupational contact dermatitis. Isobornyl acrylate sensitization has been reported in only 2 cases. We encountered an industrial process operator with occupational contact dermatitis caused by isobornyl acrylate. OBJECTIVES (i) To investigate whether it is relevant to add isobornyl acrylate to the (meth)acrylate test series. (ii) To repor...
متن کاملIs there a good in vivo method to show whether gloves are sufficiently protective when a nail technician is exposed to (meth)acrylates? An in vivo pilot study.
We report a case of a non-atopic, 37-year-old nail technician who developed blisters, itching, scaling, and redness, that is, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), on the hands and fingers owing to sensitization tomethacrylates and acrylates, in this article called (meth)acrylates, only months after finishing her trainee period. The protective effect of gloves was studied in an in vivo system simu...
متن کاملNo contact allergy to acrylic acid and methacrylic acid in routinely tested dermatitis patients.
Occupational and non-occupational contact allergy to, and allergic contact dermatitis caused by, acrylates/methacrylates are frequently reported (1–18). However, there is no acrylate/methacrylate test preparation in the European baseline patch test series (19). Therefore, contact allergy to, and allergic contact dermatitis caused by, acrylates/methacrylates may be overlooked when the decision i...
متن کاملContact allergy resulting from the use of acrylate nails is increasing in both users and those who are occupationally exposed.
Acrylates andmethacrylates are the salts, esters and conjugate bases of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, respectively. They are well known to cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) (1). Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) resulting from the use of (meth)acrylates has been widely reported in beauticians and ‘nail artists’. According to The Health and Occupation Research database, the freque...
